Dry Eyes: Treatment

Artificial Tears

Dry eye syndrome may or may not be curable, dependent on the cause, but the symptoms can be managed to decrease the associated discomfort. Artificial tears can be prescribed to help lubricate the eye and alleviate the dry, itchy feeling.

Restasis

Restasis is a prescription eye drop that can increase your eyes’ natural ability to produce tears by decreasing the swelling in the eye. It comes as an emulsion that is usually applied to each eye twice a day.

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs are tiny, bio-compatible devices inserted into tear ducts to block drainage. This relatively simple office procedure increases the tear film available to the surface of the eyes.

Autologous Serum Drops

Autologous serum eye drops is a patient’s own serum that is compounded into eye drops for the treatment of severe dry eye syndrome. These drops are prescribed for patients that do not respond to treatment with artificial tear preparations or restasis. They contain all the components of human tears and have been shown to improve the ocular surface and patient comfort.

Alternative Treatments

If specific medications appear to be contributing to the syndrome then we may consider discussing alternative medications or treatments with your prescribing physician. The addition of air filters and humidifiers in your home or office will improve the environment for your eyes. Drinking plenty of water and adding specific supplements to your diet such as omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish and flax seed oil are also believed to be helpful for this condition.
